On June 27 2013, the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at Brookings hosted General Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for an event Defending the Nation at Network Speed. General Dempsey is the nation’s highest-ranking military officer. He previously served as the chief of staff of the Army, and before that as commander of U.S. Central Command. Following the general’s remarks, Brookings Senior Fellow Peter W.
